Youth Summer Camp Positions
About the Camp
The Active Illini Day Camp is Campus Recreation’s new youth summer camp program. This program will cater to children in the community ages 6-12. The camp will run for 8 weeks beginning in June and ending in early August. The camp will always be closed the week of July 4th.
This staff consists of high school and college students from the community. Camp staff will facilitate camp activities and procedures, as well as build relationships with campers and their parents over the course of the summer. All camp staff will go through a paid training program that will happen prior to the first day of camp on June 5th.
Entry-Level Positions
Camp Counselor
Purpose
The Camp Counselor position will be responsible for assisting in the supervision and safety of all children in their group. This position will require applicants to interact consistently with the children under their supervision with energy and intentionality. This position will also be responsible for managing minor behavioral issues and injuries. This position will require training provided by Campus Recreation prior to the start of camp.
Job Duties
- Supervision of Campers' Safety and Behavior
- Responsible for enforcing behavior and safety expectations for all campers in their group
- Facilitate camp schedule and daily activities/programs
- Attend all necessary training and staff meetings
- Engage and interact with campers with intentionality
- Manage minor conflicts between children
- Perform job duties with enthusiasm and professionalism
- Demonstrate a high commitment to the values of customer satisfaction and friendliness
- Communicate with parents about program offerings and assist group leads/coordinators with troubleshooting concerns
- Other duties as assigned
- Practice Proper Safety Procedures
- Responsible for the safety of all campers under their supervision
- Be proficient in all emergency action plan procedures (fire alarms, tornado drills, injuries, etc.) pertaining to all facilities and staffing areas
- Complete appropriate when necessary as it relates to emergencies and other protocols
- CPR/BBP certification is required
- Mandated reporter certification is required
COMPENSATION: $14.75/hour
Job Knowledge / Skills Required
- Thorough understanding of Campus Recreation and Active Illini Summer Camp procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively with elementary-aged youth
- Demonstrate professionalism in communication with other staff and campers
- Understanding of the responsibility that comes with supervising youth programs
Reporting Line
Work under the direct supervision of Group Leaders, Youth Programs Coordinators, and Student Coordinator
Time Commitment
Camp Counselors are expected to work a consistent schedule of 20+ hours a week. Shifts will regularly be morning, afternoon, or both. A fifteen (15) minute break is not a state, nor a federal mandated rule. However, it is University protocol that we honor the 15-minute break for each 4-hour shift worked (including back-to-back shifts). Leadership Positions
Group Leader
Purpose
The Group Lead position will serve as the manager of their designated age group. They will ensure the safety of all campers and move their group through the daily schedule in a timely manner. This position will also supervise Camp Counselors.
Job Duties
- Supervision of Designated Camper Age Group (Including both Campers and Staff)
- The person will be the onsite leader of one of the three age groups
- Ensure the group is moving through the assigned schedule in an appropriate manner
- Oversee camp counselors of the designated group and assist with campers as needed
- Explain and facilitate activities and programs included in the daily schedule
- Enforce behavior and safety expectations for counselors and campers
- Complete proper documentation as necessary (camper behavioral reports, staff infractions, daily reports, etc.)
- Consistently display energy and professionalism
- Demonstrate a high commitment to the values of customer satisfaction and friendliness
- Communicate with parents about program offerings and assist professional staff/coordinators with troubleshooting concerns as they present
- Attend all required staff training and meetings
- Be able to communicate professionally and appropriately with parents of campers
- Other duties as assigned

Camp Coordinator
Purpose
Position responsibilities include assisting the Coordinator of Competitive Sports and Community Programs in managing the Active Illini Youth Summer Camp. This position is responsible for the supervision and safety of all campers as well as assisting in the management of camp-staff members. The coordinator position is expected to work weekdays and has consistent interaction with campers and staff. The Youth Programs Student Coordinator is preferred to have at least a year of experience with youth programs and a year of experience in a leadership role.
Job Duties
- Management and Supervision of Daily Camp Activities
- Ensure camp staff is on time and following the set schedule appropriately
- Practice Proper Safety Procedures
- Responsible for the safety of all campers under their supervision
- Be proficient in all emergency action plan procedures (fire alarms, tornado drills, injuries, etc.) pertaining to each facility and staffing areas
- Complete appropriate documentation when necessary as it relates to emergencies and other protocols
COMPENSATION: $16.75/hour

- Experience facilitating youth programming and activities

- Display effective skills in leading and managing other staff members
Reporting Line
Work under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of Community Programs and Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Community Programs
Time Commitment
The Youth Programs Student Coordinator position will require a Monday through Friday presence for the duration of the Active Illini Summer Camp amounting to at least 30 hours a week. A fifteen (15) minute break is not a state, nor a federal-mandated rule. However, it is University protocol that we honor the 15-minute break for each 4-hour shift worked (including back-to-back shifts).
