Adventure Rec Positions

About

  • The Climbing Wall has open climb hours as well as climbing clinics, birthday parties, and group reservations. Prior climbing/belay experience is preferred but not required for CSA but is required for Instructors.  
  • Gear Rentals take place at the Campus Bike Center. Patrons can rent outdoor equipment like tents, sleeping bags, kayaks, and more!  
  • Students may apply to work at the climbing wall, the outdoor gear rentals, or both. It is not a requirement to work in both positions.

Applications are always open on a rolling basis. As positions are available, the Adventure Recreation department will review applications. Apply online via the Campus Recreation Human Resources Database.

Entry Level Positions

Adventure Recreation Customer Service Assistant (CSA)

Organizational Relationship

Director / Associate Director Adventure Recreation and Facility Management / Coordinator of Adventure Recreation and Leadership Programs / Adventure Recreation Program Assistant / Adventure Recreation Instructors: Climbing Clinics / Adventure Recreation [Gear Rentals & Climbing Wall] Customer-Service Assistant  

Duties and Responsibilities

Customer-Service Assistants: Climbing Wall 
  • Assist patrons by staffing the adventure center and assisting with equipment rental and providing basic knowledge of outdoor activities. 
  • Assist with operation of climbing wall; CSAs demonstrate proper safety and training techniques to potential patrons and assist with belaying patrons as needed. 
  • This is a security-sensitive position and requires completion of a background check before beginning work. 
  • Assist with the operation of the climbing wall. 
    • CSAs demonstrate proper safety and training techniques to patrons. 
    • Belay patrons and lead new climber orientations. 
    • Operate Point of Sale 
    • Assist with birthday parties and wall rentals. 
  • This is a security-sensitive position and requires completion of a background check before beginning work. 
Customer-Service Assistants: Gear Rentals 
  • Assist patrons at the Campus Bike Center with outdoor equipment rentals and gear reservations. 
    • Operate Point of Sale. 
    • Organize and sanitize outdoor equipment. 

Promotional Opportunities

Instructors 
  • After working as a CSA, there are opportunities to work as an instructor. There is a pay increase from the CSA position. 

Program Assistants 
  • Oversees Adventure Rec staff and assists with camping maintenance, wall maintenance, and office maintenance. 

Qualifications

  • Must have experience working in recreational sports programs and/or special events. Experience supervising part time employees preferred.  
  • Must have/be in progress of attaining a Bachelor’s degree. 

Minimum Work Requirements

  • Position requires flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends, and occasionally portions of academic break periods 
  • Position requires an average of 3-12 hours/week at a rate of $15.00/hour from August 12, 2024 – May 16, 2025. Summer hours available prior to August 12, 2024 and after May 16, 2025 if interested. 
  • This position is subject to a University mandated background check

  • All CSAs must be trained in instructing the Top Rope Belay Clinic 
  • Instructors may also teach Climbing 101, Lead Climbing, Gym to Crag, Kids and Teen Climbing Clinics and 1-on-1 and small group climbing training.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Assistant – Gear Rentals 
  • Assist patrons by staffing the adventure center and assisting with equipment rental and providing basic knowledge of outdoor activities. 
  • Assist with managing and scheduling the gear rentals staff 
  • This is a security-sensitive position and requires completion of a background check before beginning work. 
Program Assistant – Climbing Wall Administration and Clinics 
  • Assist with operation of climbing wall; CSAs demonstrate proper safety and training techniques to potential patrons; set routes and assist with belaying patrons as needed. 
  • Oversees Adventure Rec staff and assists with camping maintenance, wall maintenance, and office maintenance. 
  • Schedule Clinics and Instructors 
  • Train Instructors 
  • This is a security-sensitive position and requires completion of a background check before beginning work. 
Program Assistant – Head Routesetter 
  • Assist with training new routesetters, overseeing and scheduling all routesetting 
  • Organizing routesetter spaces 
  • Providing professional development to the routesetters 
  • This is a security-sensitive position and requires completion of a background check before beginning work.
