Learn to Swim Required Skills

Youth

Parent-Child

(Ages 6 months – 3 years)
Children work directly with their parents in this class to develop comfort in the water, basic skills to prepare them for swimming, and water safety. This program is designed to orient children and parents to the aquatic environment and lay a foundation that will assist with swimming development. It is not intended to teach children to swim or survive in the water on their own, but to provide parents with useful information and techniques to orient their children to the water environment. Parents are REQUIRED to participate in this level.

Advanced preschool

(Ages 3-5 years old)
No prior skills required. Children in this level must be comfortable being in the water with an instructor rather than a parent. Students will be introduced to the water and gain confidence. On the first day of the session, the swimmers will be assessed based on their abilities and placed into small groups with an instructor. The preschool level focuses on children’s progression from submerging in the water to floating with assistance and moving to floating independently as well as basic swimming on their front and back.

Level 1

(5 years old or older)
There are no prerequisites for this class. Participants will be introduced to the water, learn basic swimming movements, and build confidence in the aquatic environment.

Level 2

(5 years old or older)
Students must be able to demonstrate ability to enter/exit the pool and fully submerge without assistance, as well as float on their front with support for 3 seconds, roll to their back and float on their back with support for 5 seconds. This class will focus on independence and coordinated arm/leg movements on front and back.

Level 3 Beginner

(5 years old or older)
Students must be able to demonstrate the ability to move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll over to a back float for 15 seconds, and then return to a standing position. They should be able to push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions for 5 body lengths on their front and back. Additionally, they should be able to enter chest deep water, push off the bottom and tread or float for 10 seconds, then swim 5 body lengths and exit the water. This class introduces side skills, elementary backstroke and breathing techniques.

Level 3

(5 years old or older)
This course offering is a blend between our Level 3 Beginner and Level 3 Advanced courses and intended for participants classifying under both skill levels. Students should be able to push off the wall and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions for 5 body lengths on their front and back upon enrollment. This class builds endurance for skills on front and back and refines side skills and breathing techniques by covering the front crawl, backstroke, and elementary backstroke.

Level 3 Advanced

(5 years old or older)
Students should be able to push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions for 8 body lengths on their front and back. Additionally, they should be able to enter chest deep water, push off the bottom and tread or float for 20 seconds, then swim 5 body lengths and exit the water. This class builds endurance for skills on front and back and refines side skills and breathing techniques.

Level 4

(5 years old or older)
Students must be able to jump into deep water from the side and recover to the surface, after this they must maintain position by treading or floating for 60 seconds, rotate to face the appropriate direction and swim front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yards, then exit the water. They must also be able to push off in a streamline position, swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction to swim 15 yard elementary backstroke, then exit the water. Sidestroke and butterfly are introduced at this level and participants will refine all previous skills.

Level 5

(5 years old or older)
Students must be able to perform a feet first entry into chest-deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards, swim breaststroke for 15 yards, tread water for 1 minute, and swim backstroke for 25 yards. Additionally, they must be able to submerge and swim a distance of 3 to 5 body lengths underwater, return to the surface and exit the water. Diving and turns are introduced and participants will refine all skills and build endurance.

Level 6

(5 years old or older)
Students must be able to perform a shallow dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards, swim breaststroke for 25 yards, and swim backstroke for 25 yards performing appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout. Endurance swimming for fitness and water rescue and advanced stroke refinement are taught at this level.

Youth Swim Conditioning

Students must be able to swim 500 yards continuously, which includes 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards back crawl, 100 yards breaststroke, 50 yards elementary backstroke, 50 yards sidestroke, 50 yards butterfly, 100 yards of swimmer’s choice of stroke. Additionally, participants must be able to swim continuously for a minimum of 12 minutes. The focus of this class is stroke technique refinement, swimming endurance, and increasing swimming speed.

Adult

Adult Beginner 1

The class is for participants with little to no experience in the water. Its focus is on developing comfort in the water along with basic swimming safety skills. The goal is to be able to swim one pool length and gain comfort in deep water.

Adult Beginner 2
