Fitness Area Policies
Individuals assume a risk of injury or even death while voluntarily electing to participate in physical activity. All participants are strongly encouraged by Campus Recreation to have a health evaluation; consult with their physician to determine appropriate fitness level; use good judgment concerning their ability; participate at an appropriate level; and to carry medical insurance coverage.
The following fitness area etiquette and guidelines will promote an enjoyable and safe experience for all users:
- Equipment is not to be removed from designated areas to be used in other spaces.
- Outside strength equipment is not allowed in any Campus Recreation facility. Users are asked to use the equipment available in the facility.
- Please return all equipment to its proper location after use.
- Climbing on fitness equipment, hanging upside down, or performing acrobatic moves are prohibited.
- Limit your time on cardio equipment to 30 minutes during peak hours or when other patrons are waiting.
- To avoid congestion and lines, patrons should allow others to work in-between sets while using strength training equipment.
- Patrons are required to clean the equipment before and immediately after use. Antibacterial cleaning wipes or disinfectant spray are provided to clean/disinfect equipment.

- Headphones must be used while listening to personal music.
- Lift weights in a controlled manner refraining from slamming weight stacks.
- No bags, coats, books, etc. allowed in workout areas. Day lockers are available for storage.
- Compressed chalk is allowed, but only on the lifting platforms. Loose chalk is prohibited. Individuals are responsible for cleaning up after themselves.
- Report any damaged or faulty fitness equipment to the on-duty floor staff or member services.
- Unauthorized use of facilities for instructing/coaching is prohibited, including personal training.
- The on-duty Campus Recreation staff has authority over all fitness area conduct and use of equipment.
For your safety, as well as others, we require the following safe practices:
- Spotters are strongly recommended while lifting weights. Campus Recreation staff are not available to act as a spotter.
- Use extreme caution when lifting weights to avoid potential injury to yourself or others.
- Lift weights in a controlled manner, refraining from slamming weight stacks.
- Do not drop dumbbells, kettlebells, slam balls, med balls, weight plates and other equipment on the floor.
- Throwing of medicine balls permitted in designated racquetball court when available.
- Do not leave weight plates and bars on the floor or leaned against the wall, mirror, or equipment. Patrons must remain at least one arm’s length away from mirrors.
- Weight plate collars must be used with all Olympic bars.
- Weight belts that may damage equipment must be removed or covered appropriately.
- Deadlifts and squats must be performed inside a squat rack or on a platform.
- No Olympic lifts performed over the head permitted, i.e., no overhead press, no snatch, no push press.
- Closed-toe activity-appropriate footwear is required. Shoes must have a heel or heel strap. Socks and back-less shoes will not be allowed. Please make sure shoes are free of debris before entering the facility.
- Shoeless and barefoot training is not advised in our facilities but allowed only (at your own risk) on the platforms and in the squat racks while performing squats and deadlifts. Proper foot attire is required outside of these designated lifting areas.
- For health and safety reasons a shirt is required that covers the entire torso, including the stomach, back, rib cage, and chest.
- Clothing deemed potentially damaging to the equipment is prohibited, as determined by the Campus Recreation staff.
- Minimal jewelry is advised.
- Spitting on the floor, machine, or drinking fountain is prohibited.
