Re-Opening FAQ

Your safety, and that of our staff, is our top priority, and we have implemented health and safety guidelines set by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the University of Illinois. Many of our services, amenities, and activities will be available in phases, and some of our spaces will have new capacity limits based on the guidelines and out of an abundance of caution.

Re-Opening Date: August 17, 2020

Stage 1 – August 17 through August 24 – check out our Campus Rec space grid to see what areas will be open or closed during Stage 1.

  • 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.; CLOSED Weekends
  • Cardio & strength equipment, including track

Stage 2 – August 24 through Semester End

  • M-F: 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.; SAT/SUN: Noon – 8 p.m.
  • Areas to open during this stage will be announced at a later date.

*Scheduled barring any unexpected issues that would prevent us from opening in a safe and effective manner.

Q: What facilities will be closed until further notice?

  • CREC – CLOSED; only utilized for COVID-19 testing

Q: What are the hours of operation for ARC?

  • August 17-24; MON-FRI: 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., CLOSED Weekends
  • August 24-End of Fall Semester; MON-FRI: 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.; SAT/SUN: Noon – 8 p.m. (based on University attendance)

Q: Why are some spaces not opening until later Stages?

  • We need a few extra weeks to prep that our facilities for reopening, as well as to train and hire our staff

Q: Will my membership be valid upon arrival?

  • All payroll deduction memberships will be valid with no further disruption to your membership. Annual memberships that expire August 15 will be extended to August 31 to allow plenty of time to renew.

Q: How can I renew my locker?

  • We are offering a locker renewal/clean period prior to ARC officially opening, on August 6-7 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. You can renew your membership and/or locker at this time, as well as clean your locker out if you aren’t joining us this Fall.

Q: What changes are you implementing to keep members safe?

  • Mask requirement: All patrons must wear a face mask per University mandate at all times except when unable to do so while exercising as long as all other facility policies, rules and guidelines are followed
    • Patrons must keep their masks in their possession at all times and resume wearing them immediately following strenuous exercise (and necessary recovery / cool down time)
    • Patrons must wear masks any time they are not exercising strenuously
    • Patrons will be asked to comply with guidance and direction provided by staff
  • Physical distancing: Members and staff will be asked to stay a minimum of 6ft apart. Exercise equipment will be moved to ensure at least 6 ft of physical distance.
  • Capacity limits: Per IDPH guidelines, capacity will be limited to the lesser of 50 people or 50% of space capacity per distinct area within each facility. No area will exceed 50 people.
  • Enhanced cleaning protocols: We are implementing and training our staff on enhanced cleaning procedures using a variety of disinfecting agents effective against coronavirus. In order to perform our enhanced cleaning procedures, some areas and/or equipment may be temporarily unavailable for use.
  • Staff precautions: All staff will wear masks, regularly wash their hands while working, and stay home if they are not feeling well. Student staff will be separated from members by partitions.

Q: What are your expectations of members?

  • The safety of our employees and our members is a shared responsibility. As such, we expect all of our patrons to:
    • Stay home or go home if they feel ill or present any COVID-19 related symptoms.
    • Wear a face mask per University mandate at all times except when unable to do so while exercising as long as all other facility policies, rules and guidelines are followed:
      • Keep their masks in their possession at all times and resume wearing them immediately following strenuous exercise (and necessary recovery / cool down time)
      • Wear masks any time they are not exercising strenuously.
      • Patrons will be asked to comply with guidance and direction provided by staff.
      • Wipe down equipment before and after each use with wipes / disinfectant provided
      • Observe physical distancing of 6ft or more
      • Avoid physical contact (high fives, hand shakes, basketball games, etc)
      • Respect and follow safety procedures, guidelines, directional signage, and instructions from employee & pro staff

Q: Will masks be required?

  • Per University policy, masks or alternative mouth/face coverings (ex. gaiters) must be worn indoors at all times except when unable to do so while exercising (see list of activities below) as long as all other facility policies, rules and guidelines are followed:
    • Keep their masks in their possession at all times and resume wearing them immediately following strenuous exercise (and necessary recovery / cool down time)
    • Wear masks any time they are not exercising strenuously.
    • Patrons will be asked to comply with guidance and direction provided by staff.
  • The following is a list of activities patrons can engage in without using a mask as long as all other facility policies, rules and guidelines are followed:
    • High-exertion cardiovascular exercise; this includes:
    • Using treadmills, ellipticals, rowing ergometers, stationary bicycles, and other cardio equipment
    • Running or walking on the indoor track
    • Swimming
    • Using the racquetball/squash courts for solo practice
    • Engaging in physically-distanced badminton and table tennis
    • High-exertion strength training (free / selectorized equipment)
    • Stretching

Q: What amenities will not be available upon reopening?

  • Following guidance from the CDC, IDPH, and University, the following will not be available until further notice:
    • Vending machines
    • Drinking fountains; only contactless bottle fillers will be available for use. We encourage members to bring their own refillable, reusable bottles
    • Towel service (both in our locker rooms and throughout the facilities). We encourage members to bring their own towel(s).
    • Saunas
    • Steam rooms
    • Non-single stalled showers
    • Stretching mats

Q: What facility access options will not be available upon reopening?

  • Following guidance from the IDPH, CDC, and the University, the following will not be available until further notice:
    • Guest Passes

Q: How will members gain entry to the facility?

  • Members will enter through the main entrance off Peabody Drive. Members will use the doors on the left side of the main entrance to enter. The doors located on the right will only be used as exits.

Q: Which cardio machines will be available?

  • About half of our machines will be available in their normal locations to allow for appropriate social distancing between members while working out. 
  • In order to perform enhanced cleaning, certain areas and equipment may be temporarily unavailable or out-of-service.
  • Members should wipe down equipment after each use (disinfecting wipes will be available throughout the facility).
  • Members should remain in their workout stations to cool down and only leave that station when they feel safe and comfortable donning a mask.
  • All floor fans will be removed from the activity areas; large ceiling fans will not be turned on.

Q: What fitness equipment will be available?

  • The following functional equipment can be checked out at the North and South equipment rooms:
    • Various exercise balls
    • Various exercise bands
    • Jump ropes
    • Attachments for cable pulling machines
    • Mats for stretching
  • Weights and kettlebells, and a limited number of barbells will still be available on the floor.
  • Not all selectorized weight machines will be available each day
  • Large stretching mats have been removed.
  • Foam and rumble rollers will not be available.
  • Members should remain in their workout stations to cool down and only leave that station when they feel safe and comfortable donning a mask.

Q: Will racquetball / squash / handball courts be open for use?

  • Courts are enclosed spaces and competitive play does not allow for proper physical distancing, so court usage will be limited to solo practice only. Usage will be monitored by staff and reservations are required.

Q: Will competitive sports (intramurals and sports clubs) be offered or available?

  • No competitive sports will be offered at this time, but we are exploring ways to bring these back in the future. Stay tuned!

Q: Will pick-up basketball and other Open Rec Sports (e.g. pickup basketball, group dance practices, or court sports, etc.) be allowed?

  • Open Rec Sports will not be allowed until further notice.

Q: Will the sauna at the ARC be open?

  • The sauna will remain CLOSED until further notice.

Q: Will there be Group Fitness classes?

  • Group Fitness classes will continue this Fall. Class sizes will be small and each participant will have their own quadrant they are to stay in during class.

Q: Will the ARC indoor and outdoor pool be open this Fall?

  • The ARC indoor pool will be open with capacity limitations and we are continuing to assess this area and determine the best time frame to open up this area of the facility. We do know that the ARC outdoor pool will not be open for members during the Fall semester.

Q: How do I freeze my membership once ARC re-opens?

  • Members will have the option to keep their membership on pause at it is now, re-start, or completely cancel. The pause will only be for a few months and then we will ask members to either cancel or we will re-start.

Q: If I had a membership last year, can it be prorated towards this year? How much would it cost (faculty) staff for the fall semester when the prorated rate is applied?

  • If you did not request a refund, we placed a pro-rated credit on your account to be used towards a future membership purchase. The credit amount would depend on what type of membership you previously purchased. If you would like to know how much that credit would be, please reach out to Member Services and they will be able to verify your specific amount information and credit.

Q: Will locker rooms be open?

  • Yes, locker rooms will be open and shower stalls will alternate every hour between being operable and closed for disinfection. We will be posting this schedule soon.

Q: When are students able to use the ARC?

  • If a student is registered for fall classes their fees start on August 16. If you choose to come in prior to then, you must have your fall registration schedule pulled up on a phone or computer, show Member Services, and they will activate your iCard for you.

Q: Regarding facility usage by spouses and partners: Does the recent email from the Chancellor requiring twice weekly COVID-19 testing of UIUC faculty and staff mean that others who previously used ARC with memberships joined to UIUC employees cannot do so unless they have ways to having twice weekly testing as well?

  • At this time we are allowing sponsored memberships, and are still determining the appropriate requirements for non-faculty/staff/students. Please continue to watch our website for more information.

Q: How many air changes per hour are there on the track and upstairs fitness machines

  • We utilize a central air system, so the air isn’t necessarily changed, it’s filtered and recycled throughout the facility.

Q: Will there be a capacity for the ARC?

  • ARC will have a capacity of 183 people in the facility at a time during Stage 1. We are still waiting if this number will change when classes begin. We will have a Facility Count that is constantly updated which will be placed on our website so you can see if you are able to get in.
